Fontanafredda Barolo Serralunga d’Alba 2012 Tasting Notes

This beautiful wine opened up with translucent garnet color with wide lightening at the edges. The impressive aromas followed.
Floral nose with notes of violets and dried flowers, raspberry, plum, and vanilla made a great introduction to flavors.
The palate met us with fresh acidity, substantial tannins, and continued with raspberry, red plum, and vanilla.
Long finish concluded with lingering flavors of raspberry with whipped cream.

Winery

The magnificent Fontanafredda estate is set among the splendid Langhe hillsides, in the very heart of Piedmont. It once belonged to King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy, who made a gift of it to Rosa Vercellana, a commoner who was the love of his life. An ancient love story kept alive by the winemaking passion of Emanuele Guerreri, Conte di Mirafiore, son of the King and his “Bela Rusin” (as she was popularly known), a modern-minded entrepreneur who dedicated his life to wine. Fontanafredda maintains the flavors of this passionate tale. The winery is eager to renew and improve constantly which has always distinguished this great label, a leader among leaders in the Langhe territory.

Vineyards

Vineyards are located in medium and upper slopes (985-1300 feet above sea level). All vineyards face south/south-west. The soils are of Miocene-Helvetian origin with a high content of limestone and grey marl alternating with sand.
