Johanneshof Reinisch 2016 is an aromatic white wine almost exclusively found in the Gumpoldskirchen district of the Thermenregion in Austria. The Theremregion takes its name after geothermal hot springs that flow under the vineyards here.
In footsteps of 2,000 year legacy of wine growing in the region, the Reinisch family is producing wine in the fourth generation. The current winemaking team is three brothers: Hannes, Christian, and Michael. They farm organically and take their thoughtful approach every step of the way from vineyard to cellar to bottle. While they are more known for producing solid quality Pinot Noir and St. Laurent, their white wines are as impressive.
Johanneshof Reinisch 2016 Tasting Notes
This wine is made from an obscure grape variety Rotgipfler that represents only 0.2% of Austrian grapes and grows almost exclusively in Thermenregion near Vienna.
Johanneshof Reinisch makes quite a statement on the nose. It surprised us with a nutty and mineral aroma reminiscent of sunflower seeds combined with vanilla, a touch of lychee and waxy notes.
The palate is peppery and slightly savory with flavors of yellow plum and nutty apple. Quite an unusual combination. It has a full body, refreshing acid and pleasant throat warming effect.
In summary, this bottle was a discovery for us. Its rare nose and flavors combinations are something extraordinary and unexpected from white wines and that what makes it so unique and exciting.
