Charles Smith Winery
Inside Walla Walla Tasting Room
Charles, the owner, and the winemaker likes to call himself Forest Gump of wine, yet he is among the most prolific winemakers of United States.
Before founding the winery, California native Charles Smith, the future proprietor, and winemaker of K Vintners spend almost a decade in Scandinavia. While there he managed rock bands and concert tours throughout Europe that included wining and dining. In 1999 Charles came back to the states and settled in Seatle. The same year he met young Frenchman and winemaker while on the road trip in Walla Walla Valley of Washington. This young winemaker ignited Charles's passion for making his own juice. In 2001 K Vintners opened the doors to the public and released its first 1999 K Syrah that made Charles famous for producing great wine. Ever since K Vintners keeps pleasing our palates with wines made for glasses, not for cellars.
There's only one challenge when you come to try wines in this tasting room - choice. Tasting fee covers 6 wines out of two dozens on the list. There are a few different labels with wines ranging from $12 to140.
We tasted 12 wines under K Vintners label including infamous EL Jefe Tempranillo, Royal City Syrah, and King Coal Cab Sav/Syrah blend - all 2015 vintage. True to Charle's promise these wines are ready to drink now and capable of evolving into even more complex wines with age.
This is a must when you're wineswinging in Walla Walla because Smith Wines have one of the most impressive tasting lineups and everyone will find something they want to try. We did take more than a few "souvenirs" home to get a second opinion.
