Goru Gold 2017 is an excellent example of why Spain is one of the best places to find great value wines. Here’s why!
Ego Bodega
2017 Goru Gold is made by a relative newcomer to the Spanish wine scene – Ego Bodega. The owners Spaniard Santos Ortiz and Romanian Ioana Paunescu started from scratch in 2011.
They partnered with experienced winemaker Luis Javier Pérez specializing in Monastrell, star grape variety of Jumilla region. Together they adapted the traditional and modern winemaking techniques to achieve quick success.
Excellent wine quality, creative design, innovative marketing, and the right price helped them gain a foothold in 30 countries by 2013.
Goru Gold 2017
Goru Gold 2017 is made from Monastrell 80%, Syrah 15%, and Cabernet Sauvignon 5% grown in the Jumilla DO, a wine region in South-Eastern Spain. Each variety is hand-harvested and fermented separately for 20 to 30 days and aged in new French and American oak barrels for 12 months. Wondering what Monastrell is? In France, it’s Mourvèdre, but locals may call it Mataro as well. It performs exceptionally well in the Jumilla region, thanks to sunny and dry summers. That’s why it occupies 80% of local vineyards.
In a Glass
In aromas, Goru Gold combines cherry and maraschino cherry, plum, and prune.
The flavors are equally fruit-forward with black currant, black plum, blackberry, and a hint of dark chocolate and smoke.
The fruit is balanced by substantial acidity and good tannins that help refresh the palate and make you want to take another sip.
With a price under $15, it’s a fantastic value that will satisfy wine lovers with more sophisticated palates and those looking for a bold red wine.
