2021 Proprietà Sperino “Rosa del Rosa”

2021 Proprietà Sperino "Rosa del Rosa"

The 2021 Proprietà Sperino “Rosa del Rosa” Piemonte Rosato was a highlight of the 2023 Rosé season that traditionally starts on Memorial Day weekend.

With Rosé being one of the fastest-growing segments of the wine market, competition is fierce. And while there are many well-made wines, they usually fall into the category of drink-and-forget.

From the first sip, we could tell “Rosa del Rosa” was an exceptional Rosato (Italian for Rosé).

In the Bottle

The grapes for Rosa del Rosa came from four different vineyards in the heart of Piemonte, one of which is Madonna degli Angeli, with 45-90 years old vines. Why is that a big deal? The older the vines, the more intense the flavors.

It’s a blend of 85% Nebbiolo, the most famous Piemonte grape, and 15% Vespolina, a little-known indigenous grape of the area that almost disappeared but now going through Renaissance. To retain its unique character, wine was aged on lees for six months before bottling. Check out the similar red blend by the same producer.

So what did we taste?

In the Glass

Rosa del Rosa had us from the first sniff. Everything in this Rosé was synergistic: from the beautiful strawberry-copper pink color to the aroma of peach, cherry jam, dusty rose, and honeysuckle to a tart, refreshing palate filled with red berries, cranberries, quince, and a hint of orange fruitiness. Rosa del Rosa’s distinct spiciness amplified the flavors and gave a polished and long finish.

The 2023 Rosé season just started, and we already have a favorite. We look forward to comparing it to other Rosé wines in our cellar.

Wine from old vines is usually more complex! I never tasted rose wine made from old vines though.
