2015 Agathe Bursin Riesling Zinnkoepfle Vendanges Tardives

2015 Agathe Bursin Riesling Zinnkoepfle became our first Grand Cru wine from this producer, and we are looking forward to tasting more from this appellation.

Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé

The Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé dominates the picturesque Vallis Praenobilis (the highly noble valley) in ancient texts. It is located between 300 and 420 m above the villages of Soultzmatt and Westhalten and covers an area of 68.40 hectares. The name “Zinnkoepfle” comes from “Sonne Koepflé” or “Sonne Arle;” the local name given to small circular marine fossils. Sheltered from the wind and precipitation and by virtue of its altitude, it is practically the Mediterranean and Caspian flora and fauna summit. It is a Triassic calcareous-sandstone soil. On this predominantly Mushchelkalk terroir, the Zinnkoepflé’s shell limestone and the low rainfall produce highly fragrant and spicy wines.

We found 2015 Riesling fantastic and enjoyed every drop of it!

The ripe, tangy, fruity nose offers ripe orange, apricots, and honey notes and some lovely minerality with chalk notes. Orange blossom and vanilla add some layers to the complex nose. On a palate, it comes off as very unforced and stylish despite its considerable concentration: orange, honey, candied lemon, apple pie, and even some baking spice.

It is very Alsace in its rich and ripe style yet not heavy at all. A long apple-orangy finish completes the experience, making it very memorable!
