2018 Brandborg All Hands Pétillant Naturel

2018 Brandborg All Hands Pétillant Naturel

Have you tried Petillant yet? It's been growing in popularity in recent years. 2018 All Hands Pétillant by Brandborg Winery of Umpqua Valley of Oregon is one of the best we tasted so far.

So what is Pétillant or pét-nat anyway? Think of it as original Champagne.

This sparkling wine method is so old that the French call it "methode ancestrale." Unlike classic sparkling, pét-nats can be made of any grape variety. Often pét-nats can be funky, and some specifically made that way. While some funkiness is fine, it can be overbearing if funk gets out of control.

Like many fine things in life, Pétillant was discovered by accident, but 2018 All Hands is no accident but rather skillfully crafted bubbly. It is Riesling based and comes from the 27-year old vines, and Terry Brandborg, the winemaker, took full advantage of it and created the most enjoyable pét-naturel.

All Hands has grapey Riesling and green apple aromas. On the palate, it tastes like muscat and apple cider with a touch of minerality.

One of the best parts, All Hands, had no funk at all, and we loved it.

So what 2018 All Hands Pétillant pairs best with?

It's an excellent aperitif that works well with cheeses, nuts, salads, fruit salads, sunny afternoons, and good friends.
