2019 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon comes from one of the most respected and renowned wineries of Napa Valley of California.

It belongs to a select few wineries that have spearheaded the rise of Californa winemaking. Founded in 1919, Far Niente lived through all the drama of the prohibition era in the early 20th century and the triumph of Napa wine when it beat the French at its own game during “Judgement of Paris” wine tasting in 1976.

In short, drinking Far Niente is an experience because you get in your glass some of the best wines in the world.

In the Glass

What impressed us from the get-go was the balance of this wine both on the palate and the nose.

The aroma of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and black currant was balanced by the light notes of fresh green bell pepper and vanilla bean.

Far Niente was jammy on the palate, still not over the top. Blackberry and black cherry flavors were joined by plum and tempered dark chocolate and light vanilla flavors that sang in unison.

Finish

The ripeness of the berries wasn’t overbearing and in your face, like typical California Cabs tend to do. Undoubtedly, it’s a recognizably fruit-forward style the Napa is famous for. While the perfectly ripe fruit led the way, it allowed the bouquet’s intricacies to come through.

Comparing it to Caymus, which is in the same league as Far Niente ($100 wines), we would side with the latter for its balance and complexity.

What are your thoughts when you compare Far Nienty vs. Caymus?
