Domaine Berthier Saint-Amour 2019

Tasting Domaine Berthier Saint-Amour 2019 we suddenly had to ask ourselves: do we know the secret of Gamay?

As one winemaker said, Gamay, when compared to Pinot noir, can certainly put a smile on your face, as opposed to pinot noir, which adds a philosophical expression to one’s face rather.

Domaine Berthier Esprit de Séduction Saint-Amour 2019

The best way to characterize Domaine Berthier Esprit de Séduction Saint-Amour 2019 is as a smiling philosopher!

This bottle came from the Saint-Amour appellation in the Beaujolais region of France. Generally speaking, Saint-Amour AOC produces wines of two different styles, thanks to its various soils, including granite, schist, and clay. First, the easy-drinking wine tends to have the aromas of iris or violet and sometimes raspberry. The second is more powerful and complex, characterized by the Kirsch (sour cherry liqueur) and spice aromas.

What kind of Gamay do you prefer?

Domaine Berthier Esprit de Séduction 2019 is made with 100% Gamay grape
It had elegant aromas of fresh cherry, cherry tree tar, red peony, and brambly red berries.
The flavors were a rather interesting combination of dry cherries, lingonberry, and dry apricots. Velvety tannins, high acidity, and substantial alcohol suggest that it can age gracefully.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Pairing this Gamay with duck confit would be our perfect choice! We also think of roasted goose with a cranberry sauce if we drink it during colder months. However, the best pairing to our taste would be a grilled or poached wild Alaskan salmon with caraway seeds and pink pepper.

What are your thoughts on Gamay wines from this area or other parts of the Beaujolais region?
