For us, February marks the beginning of the new wine season, starting with the Walla Walla wine-tasting event in Portland. Around fifty wineries come together to showcase their wines, offering Portland a taste of their best products. The 2024 event was as delightful as the Walla Walla Wine Tour in 2023.
If you’re a wine enthusiast, this event is perfect for you. With over 200 Washingtonian and Oregonian wines from some of the region’s best producers, it’s an opportunity to taste and discover new wines. Chatting with winemakers is also a great way to learn about the latest vintage and wine quality.
We learned that while 2023 was more of a typical vintage, the start of 2024 was challenging. The extreme freeze in mid-January of 2024 damaged some vines and may result in lower yields in Walla Walla Valley and less wine made. We hope nature will be kind to growers and winemakers for the rest of the year and make up for the challenging start.
There were noticeably more attendees this year, showing that the Walla Walla event and this world-class region are gaining even more popularity. We also noticed more sparkling wines and a few winemakers said they plan to produce bubbles, reflecting the global market trend toward bubbles. We look forward to trying it because we love Champagne and other sparkling wines.
Professional wine tasting may seem like a leisurely activity, but it can be pretty exhausting. This is because our senses of smell and taste are connected to various parts of our brain, making it work at full speed when we taste wines non-stop for a few hours. It’s like driving in a busy city center at 100 mph!
Considering we only had three hours to taste over 200 wines and chat with winemakers, we devised a clever strategy that helped us to stay focused and offered us a unique opportunity to provide even more benefits to our users.
