Wineswinging at Cerulean Winery Tasting Room

Cerulean Winery

Have you ever started something that wasn’t for money but for the love of things? Cerulean is precisely that kind of winery.

A boutique winery in the Gorge region of Oregon state has a small production with the goal of producing the wine the way owners like it and sharing their wine for wine with others.

On a visit to the winery’s tasting room in Hood River, Oregon, we tried a few of their wines.

  • 2020 Rosé Pinot Noir
  • 2015 Gruner Veltliner
  • 2015 Chardonnay Reserve
  • 2013 Nebbiolo
  • 2016 Sangiovese

In our experience, Italian varietals like Nebbiolo and Sangiovese are the most challenging to grow and make wine in Oregon and Washington. To our surprise, these two are among our favorites.

2013 Nebbiolo was quite close to what we expect from this noble Italian grape with notes of dry sour cherry, dry herbs, and a velvety profile.

We were impressed with the mushroom, earthy, and cherry notes of 2016 Sangiovese made with grapes from Columbia AVA.

Both red wines were rounded and smooth, with a minimum of tannings – a perfect choice for everyone who tries to avoid them.

On our visit, we asked if they had plans to expand production and become a larger winery. The tasting room manager said, for now, they are staying small, and if you’d like to try their wines, you’ll have to visit their tasting room in Hood River, Oregon.
